How to choose a bedtime story app: 6 questions to ask

By SlumberTales Editorial Desk · Updated September 26, 2026 · For parents and guardians

An adult's hands hold a small checklist notepad at a kitchen table in the evening, beside a tablet showing a moonlit storybook scene, a mug of tea, and a child's dragon drawing on the wall.

Bedtime story apps look alike in the app store and work very differently at 8 PM. These six questions sort them out quickly. They apply to any app, ours included.

Our answers are at the bottom of each section. We don't quote other companies' prices or story counts; check those on their own sites.

1. Who does the reading: you, or a speaker?

Some apps are listening libraries a child can start alone. Others are written stories a parent reads aloud. Neither is wrong. They just make very different evenings.

SlumberTales: a parent reads on every plan. Premium adds audio narration if you want a story played as well as read.

2. Is it really unlimited?

Look for the monthly cap in the plan details, not the headline. "Unlimited" sometimes means an unlimited catalog of pre-made stories, which is different from new stories written for your child.

SlumberTales: Paid plans include a monthly story cap: 12, 20, or 30 stories — not unlimited. Plus is 20 a month shared across up to two children. Premium is 30 a month per child.

3. What does it ask about your child?

A first name, an age, and a few favorite things are enough to make a story personal. Be careful with anything that asks for photos, a last name, a school, or a child's own login.

SlumberTales: a first name, an age from about 2 to 12, how they look so the illustrations match, and a few favorites. Accounts are for adults 18 or older, and the child never gets a login. The full notice is at https://slumbertales.app/privacy.

4. Can you cancel by yourself?

If cancelling means emailing support and waiting, that tells you something. A good app lets you cancel from your own account.

SlumberTales: Yes. Open Settings → Manage billing to change or cancel your plan in the Stripe billing portal. You do not need to contact support to cancel. Cancel at period end as shown in the portal. For a full money-back refund, use Settings → Request full refund.

5. What's the real price after the intro offer?

Intro prices are fine as long as the renewal price is right there next to them. Write down what you'll pay in month two.

SlumberTales: After that first story, start a plan: $4.99 for your first month, then your plan's regular monthly price. Regular prices are $9.99, $14.99, or $19.99 a month, or $99.90, $149.90, or $199.90 a year.

6. Can you read a full sample before paying?

A sample paragraph doesn't tell you much. A whole story, read aloud in your own chair, tells you nearly everything.

SlumberTales: the sample at https://slumbertales.app/sample is a complete story with your child's first name, and it needs no account or card. Your first personalized story is free as well.
